Socio-Cultural Competency Training (SCT) for Facilitators

Date: June 10-12, 2012
Fee: $1395 + HST
Registration Deadline: June 1, 2012
Instructors: Cathy Lemmon, Ekta Singh

Intern: Karla Gouthro

Who should take this course: The SCT model is applicable in a variety of settings. Trained facilitators can use it for group or individual learning, as well as improving their own communicative capability. End users who benefit from SCT may be international students, immigrants, foreign workers, new graduates, new employees, or any "cultural newcomer" to a specific context of communication and interaction.

Course Description: Individuals are faced with many challenges when they cross cultural boundaries and relocate to study or work in another country or social environment. One of the biggest and yet under supported challenges newcomers face is learning how to interact socially in their new environment. Failure to develop social skills in the new culture can result in:

  • Social isolation
  • Unsuccessful academic or employment experiences
  • Discrimination
  • Social anxiety
  • Social avoidance

Socio-cultural Competency Training (SCT) uses an experiential learning model to guide learners (usually newcomers to the culture) in acquiring micro-communication skills that are useful in their professional and personal lives. This evidence-based communication skills training approach examines the impact of values and interests on the way people interact with each other in specific contexts such as the workplace. It pays attention to the interests and value systems which people bring with them as part of living or working together in a multicultural society that contains a large variety of cultural backgrounds and diverse value systems. SCT has been used extensively in Australia and is becoming more widely known and used in Canada. SCT participant feedback:

  • “It’s important for newcomers to understand the culture.”
  • "...how to decline a request. It is basically one of the most useful parts of the program.”
  • “... important to understand that cultural norms are different in different cultures, but there’s no right or wrong way – (we're) not trying to assimilate – important to enforce.”
  • “training and practice of a procedure that can be followed and reproduced.”
  • “Gaining confidence ....”
