People's Choice Winner

Entrance to the Taj Mahal by Gokul Ramamurthy

After spending considerable time adjusting my lens and camera for a decent shot, I realized I wasn't alone at the TAJ. Thousand of locals and tourists were thronging into it on this winter afternoon. I was pushed away from the center (where I thought I would have the perfect center-frame shot), got yelled at by the policemen a several times. But I simply stood my ground! As I was getting used to focusing my camera on this very large and monumental subject, I heard an english speaking tour guide say that the TAJ is visited by nearly 4 million people a year. At that instant I quickly pressed the shutter hoping to capture the TAJ as it is was being engulfed by people from all around the world. (Agra, India. January, 2008)

Grand Prize Winner

Generations by Nadine Compton

In this picture are my cousin's son and her grandmother. I just loved the juxtaposition of the young and the old, as they both rest together at the end of a long afternoon, her body supporting his, wrapped up in a towel. I was drawn to the woman's face, with its uncharacteristically blue/green eyes and smooth skin. (Los Angeles, United States. July, 2009)

People and Culture Category Winner

Bright Culture by Kartiina O'Kane

My last day in Nepal, I awoke early to explore Kathmandu – a city meant to be little more than a place of transition between the airport and my volunteer placement two hundred kilometers west in Pokhara. What had astounded me about the country since first impressions, was the magnificent parade of colours that composed the Nepalese culture. Displayed by the people on the streets, the physical landscape, the religion, the stores, the food – and the list continues – colour and life was everywhere. This picture, I feel, captures a part of this colourful way of life, as three street vendors sell flower arrangements on the steps of a temple in Durbar Square. (Kathmandu, Nepal. June, 2009)

Student Life Category Winner

Students by Michael Lockett

These students are walking home from the local primary school.  Their faces reflect that feeling of liberation when school has finished for the day - an ubiquitous joy experienced by students of all ages and cultures. (Khaling, Bhutan. March, 2008)

My Home Away from Home Category Winner

Kaede (Maple Leaf) by Veronique Laberge

About halfway through my three-month stay in Japan my friends took me to see the coloured autumn leaves. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was delighted by how similar the colours were to those I saw in my hometown at this time of year. It was a well-needed reminder of Canada. I loved this tree in particular because it seems a bit out of place between the temple and cypress tree but it's such a bright red color you can't miss it. (Tofuku-ji, Japan. November, 2009)

Place and Environment Category Winner

A View of the Colosseum by Jonathan Yu

This photo was taken on a family trip to Rome, Italy this past January.  To me, there is nothing more symbolic of Rome than the Colosseum, but I was hoping to take a photo that was a little more unique than the usual photos that we see on the postcards.  As we were about to exit, we passed by this window that overlooked the inside of the Colosseum, and I turned back to take a few photos from this view.  The result was exactly the unique perspective that I had been hoping for. (Rome, Italy. January, 2010)
